Recovery Points vs Tow Points

Names do not prove what a vehicle point can do
A recovery point is an attachment the vehicle or system manufacturer documents for specified recovery loads and directions. A towing eye may be intended for controlled towing or loading. A transport tie-down may exist only to secure a vehicle during shipping. Similar shapes do not make these jobs interchangeable.
Use the exact vehicle manual, point instructions, service information, and any certified aftermarket-system documentation. If the purpose, installation, direction, or rating cannot be verified, treat the point as unavailable.
Recovery loads can be severe and directional
A bogged or high-centered vehicle may resist movement far beyond what a freely rolling vehicle does. Angled loading can bend a point designed for straight pull. Shock loading adds stored energy and may exceed a component that tolerates a slow controlled load.
Do not infer capacity from bolt size, metal thickness, paint color, internet popularity, or the confidence of a person saying, “That should hold.” The load path includes the chassis, fasteners, point, connectors, rope or strap, and recovering vehicle or anchor. Every part must be compatible for the intended method.
Never recover from a tow ball
A tow ball is made for its documented trailer-coupling loads, not as a general recovery connector. Do not loop a strap or rope over it. Do not use suspension arms, axles, steering links, bumpers, bull bars, safety-chain loops, or transport tie-downs unless the manufacturer specifically approves that exact point and direction for the method.
Unverified metal in a loaded recovery system can detach and travel with lethal energy. Put all bystanders outside every plausible line and hardware path.
Find and inspect approved points
The manual may illustrate removable towing eyes, permanent recovery points, or separate front and rear provisions. Check that removable eyes are the correct part, fully installed as directed, and not cross-threaded or contaminated. Aftermarket points require correct fitment, fasteners, torque procedures, inspection, and sometimes paired use.
Look for corrosion, cracks, deformation, loose fasteners, damaged threads, impact damage, missing hardware, or chassis damage. Do not use a compromised point. Cosmetic access can also be misleading: the bright loop may be easy to see because it is for transport, not heroics.
Match the point to the method
A point approved for a gentle straight-line tow may not be approved for kinetic recovery, winching, an angled pull, lifting, or snatching. Confirm the intended load direction and whether multiple points require an engineered bridle. Never invent a bridle arrangement or equalization method.
Review kinetic and static recovery equipment and winch fundamentals, then follow the instructions supplied with every component. Mixing rated gear does not automatically produce a rated system.
Build an exclusion zone around possible failure
Before loading anything, secure vehicles, establish one director, agree on signals, and remove people from between vehicles and from line, hardware, wheel, rollback, and slope paths. Stop if a connection shifts, a point bends, gear frays, communication fails, or the vehicles move outside the planned corridor.
Uncertainty means no attachment
If documentation is missing, ask the vehicle manufacturer, qualified installer, or professional recovery provider. A recovery plan can choose another controlled method or wait for suitable help.
The correct point is not whichever hole accepts a shackle. That logic also fits a coffee mug, and the mug has the good sense not to volunteer.
